This Sunday, they will take on the Queanbeyan Blues at the Workers Arena, in an effort to dethrone the current table leaders and re-establish themselves as competition favourites.
After round three, the Bulldogs were flying high following wins over the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, the Yass Magpies, and the Woden Valley Rams, which had seen them climb to number one on the ladder.
But losses to the Tuggeranong Bushrangers in round four and the West Belconnen Warriors in round six have relegated Goulburn to third.
The below-par results, said Bulldogs coach Adam Kyle, were due to overconfidence in their offensive ability.
"Because our attack's been so strong this year ... it's probably put us in a position where we haven't had to defend our line and really stick to our defensive principles as much as we should, because we know when we get in the right positions, we've got enough quality to score," Kyle said.
"It's our job this week to change that mindset. Our attack should come off our defence."
The statistics certainly back up Kyle's assertions. Despite their two recent losses, the Bulldogs have racked up a competition-high 234 points in their six matches, which is 32 more than the Blues, who have the second-most.
However, they have also conceded 132 points, which is the most out of the top three sides.
Although the team's form has been below par of late, Kyle remains optimistic and said that "we're probably sitting just about where we thought we would be at this stage of the season.
"The two losses that we've had so far have been really close."
Having led by 16-0 at one point, last Saturday's loss to the Warriors was particularly revealing of the Bulldogs' propensity to let winnable matches slip from their grasp. Kyle said that this is a mistake they cannot afford to make against the Blues.
"Campo's [Terry Campese, Queanbeyan's captain and coach] been around a long time and had a lot of success as well," he said.
"I'm sure he'll be disappointed with his team's effort on the weekend [a 24-22 loss to Gungahlin] and I'm sure he'll have them absolutely raring to come out to Goulburn and take us on."
The match between Goulburn and Queanbeyan will take place at the Goulburn Workers Arena this Sunday, May 26, from 2.15pm.
