For the NSW Police Academy, that is the career of David Kay who retired on Friday, May 24 after 32 years of teaching.
NSW Police Academy principal, Superintendent Rod Smith had nothing but praise for the veteran.
"He has been an exceptional contributor to the NSW Police Force," Supt Smith said.
"We wish him all the best in his retirement and travel."
Mr Kay said he'd never forget the wonderful time he had teaching at the Academy.
"It's been great and very enjoyable," Mr Kay said.
"I've seen places I never thought I'd get to see, including the top of the Murray River.
"People I've met on the way have been great too."
Undoubtedly, much has changed since Mr Kay first started.
"We're in the digital age now," he said.
"I have seen students go from using typewriters to computers."
David Kay will definitely be missed. But he had one final advice to both current and upcoming students.
"Find some good in what you do."
