A 113km/h wind gust has been recorded at Mt William about 1.40am while a 107km/h gust ripped through Mt Buller about 8.30am.
"The worst is over but there is still a risk. The trend will be for it to ease as the afternoon progresses," weather bureau senior meteorologist Dean Stewart told AAP on Monday.
North to northwesterly wind gusts up to 100km/h are still expected over the Tidal River, Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Mt Buller on Monday, the bureau warns.
The State Emergency Service warns people to move cars away from trees, secure loose items around the house, and keep clear of fallen power lines.
