Mareeca Flannery, Chief Executive Officer and Director of Regional Development, feels that migrants are looking for information that will provide them with the skills, confidence and understanding to establish their own business.
"Several migrants have expressed interest in setting up their own business. New businesses means more money coming into the region which also creates more job opportunities. I also put them in touch with SRBEC for an in-depth advice," Miss Flannery, RDA Southern Inland CEO and Director of Regional Development said.
Peter Gordon who is a SRBEC business trainer thinks it is a really good initiative.
"I think business is a good option but not an easy one. I have spoken to some migrants who have skills far surpassing the type of work they are currently looking. Some have university degrees and work experience. If that can be shaped, it will be a great outcome," he said.
Jayde Butz, Skilled Migration Officer at RDA Southern Inland said that the main idea about this workshop is to help migrants integrate into the society.
A similar workshop was recently held in Bowral which garnered a good feedback and another one will be held in Queanbeyan on June 25.
"The business workshop in Bowral was well-received. It gives the people an opportunity to come together. An immigrant in IT was planning to take his business to the next level and I suggested the co-working space to him where he met another immigrant with IT skills. Now, they are talking about collaborating on a project together," Miss Flannery said.
She cited another instance in which an immigrant who is planning to relocate to the region was looking for suitable options. "He walked away confident about starting his new journey," she added.
To aid the migrants, a pilot initiative in the form of a business workshop is being taken by RDA Southern Inland (RDASI) and Southern Region Business Enterprise Centre (SRBEC) in Goulburn on June 18.
