We will defend our opinions to the end when arguing about certain divisive topics like politics, pineapple on pizza, and of course... musicals. Our disagreement and discord over Musical Theatre is exactly what brings brilliant harmony to the Lieder Theatre's latest production "A Musical! Do You Hear the Lieder Sing? Again!"
The hilarious script by Blake Selmes pits two opinions against each other: the overzealous musical fanatic, played by Alfie Walker, and the unwavering sceptic, portrayed by Selmes. Their delightfully heated debate links a dazzling revue of songs from dozens of musicals, transporting the audience to Broadway, the West End and back again. If you love Musical Theatre, you've got to see this show. Bring every cynic you know... they will love it, too.

Musical Director Marianne Powles treats us to nearly every style that Musical Theatre has offered in the past century.
The band is top-notch, transforming to suit the instrumentation and mood of each song to accompany the largest cast I have ever seen on the Lieder stage.
Over-the-top comedy numbers highlight the teamwork of this fearless, talented cast. They serve up all of the grand Broadway traditions and clichés with Divas battling to out-Diva each other, a bit of scathing political humour thrown into the lyrics, and heaps of self-deprecating humour that proves Musical Theatre doesn't take itself too seriously after all.
The youngest actors often steal the show, skillfully bringing out the witty humour in the lyrics through their spirited ensemble performances.
The pace and timing of the show couldn't be better, for just when it couldn't get any funnier, a heart-felt ballad hits the audience right in the guts. As it should. There are far more talented soloists on the Lieder stage than a country town like Goulburn should statistically possess, but they are surely the stars of this show, ultimately delivering the biggest themes of modern Musical Theatre: courageous self-expression, inclusion and exuberant joy.
Choreographer Hannah Cotton has lifted the bar and brought dance to a whole new level at the Lieder. The entire cast shows off theatrical, jazz and tap styles while Hannah and Zachery Bladwell shine in a show-stopping dance number that is truly not to be missed.
Countless wardrobe changes hit the mark thanks to Helena Bozzetto's consistently clever costuming. Hats off to the collaborative direction team of Powles, Selmes, Cotton, Chrisjohn Hancock, and Deb McConnell and the tireless production team backstage. This show is a must-see.
The show continues at the Lieder Theatre Saturday August, 17 at 2pm (matinee) and 7.30pm, and Wednesday, August 21, Friday, August 23 and Saturday, August 24 at 7.30pm.
