A fire on private land on Brisbane Grove Road near Goulburn has been largely extinguished.
RFS operational officer Daniel Osborne said the outbreak was contained at 1pm. Crews are now patrolling the area and dousing hot spots.
The fire came within about 50 metres of a home on Brisbane Grove Road. However two NSW Fire and Rescue trucks were quickly on the scene and the house was not threatened.
They were joined by seven RFS crews, including Goulburn Mulwaree Support, Towrang, Towrang, Middle Arm and Gundary. In all, 26 personnel were onsite.
Mr Osborne said the outbreak burnt out four hectares of private land. The most challenging aspect was water availability, hence the extra RFS brigades.
It started on one property and spread to another, where it came close to the home. Mr Osborne said it was suspected to have started from an escaped pile burn. Investigations are underway in conjunction with police to determine if any further action is warranted.
Police temporarily blocked off Brisbane Grove Road to traffic but it has since been re-opened.
Resident Allan Hutchins, who lives opposite to where the fire spread, said it was the first outbreak of significance in the 40 years he'd lived in the area.
"We've had a few little ones around here," he said.
"This time of year it's too early for fires."

Fire crews are on the scene of a grass fire southeast of Goulburn.
Rural Fire Service operational officer Daniel Osborne said the authority was alerted to the outbreak at 11.50am on Brisbane Grove Road.
Two RFS brigades, including Mulwaree Support are on scene, along with two NSW Fire and Rescue crews.
More RFS brigades, namely Middle Arm, Gundary and Tarago are enroute.
Mr Osborne said Brisbane Grove Road could be closed due to the amount of smoke and to ensure people's safety. He asked people to stay away from the area at least until the fire was extinguished.
So far the fire has burnt out about one acre of land.
More details as they come to hand.
"It is still a running fire but there is no threat to property," Mr Osborne said.
