It is just one of a range of pedestrian improvements coming to the city, including improving access for cyclists and walkers along the Wollondilly Walkway and at the Blackshaw Road underpass.
Member for Goulburn Wendy Tuckerman announced the introduction of a new school crossing supervisor position on Bourke Street for Goulburn Public School on Friday.
She has also announced funding to Goulburn Mulwaree Council for three infrastructure projects, totalling $1.42m.
In a statement, Mrs Tuckerman said the following projects will be funded by the NSW Government and delivered by Goulburn Mulwaree Council:
- an extension to the kerb and gutter and median strip at the Goulburn Public School crossing on Bourke St ($34,646) - to calm traffic and provide increased pedestrian refuge areas on the high-traffic-volume road
- an extension the Wollondilly Walking and Cycling Trail ($723,253) - to add 550m via a culvert crossing over the Wollondilly River at Crookwell Road, linking residential areas along Mary Martin Drive and Mary's Mount Rd
- a new 1.7km path along Forbes St, Bungonia Rd and Braidwood Rd ($663,181) - to avoid the narrow railway underpass where cyclists could not be separated from motor vehicle traffic, and connect the Blackshaw Road cycleway to Goulburn's CBD.
Mrs Tuckerman said all four announcements were great wins for Goulburn.
"I'm particularly pleased to announce news for Goulburn Public School," she said.
"It was highlighted to me during the election that Bourke Street is a difficult crossing - not only for students, but for staff and parents as well. A lollipop person will strengthen the safety improvements Goulburn Mulwaree Council is undertaking."
"The extension of the river pathway will also provide a major missing link between the fast-growing Mary's Mount area and the Forbes street path will link the new Landsdowne Bridge. Both projects will provide safer, off-road connections for recreational or commuting pedestrians and cyclists."
Mayor Bob Kirk welcomed the backing for the multiple projects from the State Government.
"The proposed project on Bourke Street was identified by the school, the community and Mrs Tuckerman as crucial to providing a safe school crossing for students, staff and their families," he said.
"Dedicated paths for cyclists is the single most important factor in encouraging cycling in large regional towns like ours."
"I'm thrilled that Goulburn Mulwaree Council is developing and maintaining walking and cycling paths according to the Goulburn Mulwaree Bicycle Strategy," Cr Kirk said.
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the NSW Government would be rolling out 300 lollipop people across the state.
"Under previous requirements, a school crossing had to be used by 300 cars per hour in the morning and afternoon as well as at least 50 students to be eligible for a supervisor.
"We've changed the requirements to enable more schools to qualify for a crossing supervisor as they now only need to meet one of the criteria," Mr Toole said.
"I strongly encourage dedicated people interested in becoming a School Crossing Supervisor to keep an eye out for details on the position which will be found at iworkfor.nsw.gov.au" Mrs Tuckerman added.
