The competition was played over two weekends at the end of September and the October long weekend. The Southern Tablelands team consisted of players from Goulburn, Crookwell and Yass.
Over the course of the fortnight, the Southern Tablelands were unlucky to not get more wins and only came away with one victory from the five games played. The final game was by far the best for the boys who came away with a win over the highest-placed Canberra North team on Monday.
After winning the toss, Southern Tablelands skipper Jake Paterson elected to bat.
At drinks, the boys were in trouble at 6-65. Angus Regterschot was the first to fall after he skied a catch and was out for five.
Next in was Abdul Raheem, who was dismissed by an unplayable delivery that nipped back sharply off the pitch and bowled him between bat and pad.
Callam Barton came to the crease and hit a quick 26 before being caught out. Archie Wearne was the next to fall for nine after top-edging a ball for an easy catch.
Next in was Josh Lumsden who was out cheaply for three after being bowled by a quick yorker. The Paterson boys were both out for 11 after being caught and Danyon Bush was out caught for a duck, which brought Logan Watts to the crease with Nick Selmes for the last wicket partnership.
With some fantastic hitting by Watts, the tail wagged for some time until Selmes was bowled for six, which left Watts not out on 43 and the Southern Tablelands all out for 148.
Ideally, the boys would've like another 50-60 runs for the total.
When the team took to the field after a quick change of innings, they were all business.
From the outset, the opening combination Callum Barton and Callum Smith had the Canberra opening batters in trouble, and in the third over Barton found an edge through to the keeper, Jake Paterson.
The Canberra batters did not lose another wicket for the next 13 overs and looked like taking a quick victory until legspinner Archie Wearne came into the attack.
In his third over, Wearne removed the remaining opener LBW with a top spinner, trapping him in front without offering a shot.
Two overs later, Wearne decimated the Canberra top order with three wickets in one over. The first was caught brilliantly by Logan Watts at short mid on. The very next ball Wearne pitched a ball outside leg which spun back sharply across the body of the new batter and took the top of off stump. Wearne was unlucky not to get a hat trick with the third ball but two balls later claimed his third wicket of the over after bowling a left handed batter around his legs with a perfectly placed wrongun.
Canberra never recovered and wickets then fell frequently, as Angus Regterschot chipped in with two wickets and Danyon Bush contributed a run out from a good bit of fielding. Wearne took his fifth wicket in his last over after trapping another batter in front, and finished his spell for 5-24.
Callum Barton then finished the Canberra side off by bowling out their last batter with a quick yorker. The Southern Tablelands team showed some real grit and determination to win the game by 31 runs.
