Goulburn's Jake and Ben Staines dominated the scoring for the Canberra Chill on Saturday with three goals between them, to lead the visitors to their first victory of the season against the Perth Thundersticks.
Their first two matches of the Hockey One season saw the Chill go down against the Brisbane Blaze (4-1) and the NSW Pride (7-0), and Jake Staines said the 3-3(3-1) win over Perth was "awesome".
"We were very happy with it. Everyone was stoked actually, I think everyone enjoyed themselves."
Despite coming into the match off the back of two consecutive losses, Staines said that the team was feeling confident ahead of Saturday's clash in Perth.
"We went in confident because we'd played two pretty solid teams coming into it," Staines said.
"We weren't cocky because we knew the lineup those blokes had was pretty sharp, having an international goalie [Tyler Lovell] and the midfield they do."
The Thundersticks went into the match as slight favourites, and began in ideal fashion with goals to Tim Geers and Brayden King in the first and second halves respectively.
It was through Staines that the Chill replied, when the 22-year-old slotted a goal in the 27th minute of the game.
He duly converted the goal to very suddenly draw Canberra level and swing the momentum back in the visitors' favour.
In the fourth quarter, the Thundersticks briefly drew ahead once again thanks to Tom Wickham, but Ben Staines replied within a minute.
By full time, the scores were still level and the teams prepared for a penalty shootout.
As Perth boasted the likes of Lovell in goal, Staines was thankful that Canberra had their own international keeper in Andrew Charter.
"We knew [Lovell] was good, [but] our goalkeeper kept us in it, that's for sure," Staines said.
"[Charter] played unreal. The first three of our penalty shots we got in, so that gave us a bit of a buffer."
This weekend will be a busy one for the Chill, who travel to Melbourne on Friday night to take on HC Melbourne, before returning to Canberra on Sunday to play the Tassie Tigers.
Meanwhile, the Chill women succumbed to a 1-1(1-0) loss to Perth.
