Recently, Mr Bloomfield has raised over $4000 as part of the Great Cycle Challenge Australia.

He did this through riding 655 km on his trusty bicycle.

"This is a great organisation that has raised over $4 million so far this year alone," Mr Bloomfield said.

"It has been going for seven years and it is all about raising money for research into children's cancer by the Children's Medical Research Institute to continue their work into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

"I am getting a 'bit old in the tooth' to be riding long distances, so I am doing less, but my grandson Max Stone has also raised over $600 through riding in the challenge.

He said the wider Bloomfield family had raised another $1500 in total.

Mr Bloomfield's family has been touched by cancer and this is the reason he is passionate about raising money and awareness for research.

"I will be 80 next year and my wife has suffered pancreatic cancer 15 years ago and they gave her nine months but she is still going well," he said.

"We have also nearly lost our grandson on three occasions while he was being treated. It is not only the children who suffer, but it is also the parents as well.

"My daughter took our grandson (Max) down to Sydney Children's Hospital because she thought he had meningitis, she did not come out of that hospital for the next nine months while they treated her son."

He said cancer is the largest single killer of children from disease in Australia, with over 600 children diagnosed with cancer every year.

"Kids should be living life, not fighting for it," he said.

He said even though he had done all of his riding in October, people could continue to donate to the cause until the end of November.
