Police say the left lane of the Hume Highway near the Breadalbane Road turnoff on the Hume Highway is closed to traffic to allow firefighters safe passage.
The fire is under control and crews are expected to stay onsite for some hours mopping up.
RFS Southern Tablelands district coordinator George Shepherd said nine to 10 crews comprising 25 personnel fought the fire.
The cause of this and other spot fires at Gunning are not known at this stage.
Update: 3:45pm Saturday
RFS Southern Tablelands district coordinator George Shepherd said the fire which started on the Hume Highway near Breadalbane at about 2.50pm is contained and traffic is flowing on the southbound lanes.
There was also a minor fire earlier at 1 Collector Road in Gunning which was dealt with quickly and is now smoldering.
Lane one of the Southbound lane remains closed.

A fire is burning parallel to the Hume Highway near Breadalbane, 15 kilometres south of Goulburn.
Police say firefighters are dealing with the fire burning five hectares of bushland between Breadalbane and Lerida South Road on the Western side of the highway.
RFS Southern Tablelands district coordinator George Shepherd said multiple RFS trucks are on scene including some from Gunning, Cullerin, Merrill, Parkesbourne and Goulburn.
Lane one of the Southbound lane is closed.
