Taralga News | Historians party at Hillas Mount
The annual Christmas party of the Taralga Historical Society was held at "Hillas Mount" last Sunday.
Members who had not visited the John Hillis-built home before found much of interest in the old servants' quarters, the beautiful garden and the unusual trees.
Chris Ainsworth gave a brief history of the property, saying it was difficult because of the three men, all called John Hillas.
The first John came to the colony in 1801. John Senior did not live at Bannaby but it is believed he encouraged his son take up land there. His son, John Mark Hillas married Eliza Pearce. They had eleven children. One of these children, Matthew Woodward Hillas, married Martha Pearce . They lived at "Bannaby" for a few years before moving to their new home, "Hillasmount" in 1870.
Members were also entertained by Will Battiste, who showed his prowess on the guitar. It was voted as a very relaxed and pleasant afternoon. The next meeting will be the AGM in February.
