The work is expected to be completed by the end of December, allowing the facility to re-open after three months.

The pool was closed in late September after heavy snowfall cracked two timber roof beams. Staff immediately evacuated the facility and temporary support struts were subsequently put in place.

A spokesman said the council had been working with two companies on proposed solutions. The lowest quote for repair works is $157,420. A claim to cover this will be lodged with the council's insurance company.

Mayor Bob Kirk said he was pleased a solution had been reached to reopen the pool in a timely fashion.

"It has taken some time to come to a resolution as it will be a complicated project in which we will need to disconnect lighting and remove air-conditioning ducts to install the trusses, and then reinstate everything ' he said.

"But I'm pleased that we will be able to get the indoor pool open in just a few weeks now. It will be great to have the whole Aquatic Centre available for use for the rest of summer, as this is obviously our busiest time."

Councillors at their October 1 meeting authorised general manager Warwick Bennett to "take appropriate steps for the remedial works."

ARW Multigroup have been engaged to carry out the repairs.
