Richard Moxham from Sassafras Nuts said his farm had been affected quite badly and that he, and partner Alison Saunders, have most likely lost their walnut crop.

"Sassafras was hit really bad by the fires. In our personal circumstances, we have been luckier than most, but that means our house and main outbuildings, such as the packing shed are still ok," Mr Moxham said.

Sassafras Nuts is a commercial chestnut and walnut farm located at Sassafras in the Budawang Ranges. It was established in the early 1980s and had over 1000 chestnut trees and several hundred walnut trees.

"We had a fire plan, but we have lost a lot of equipment," Mr Moxham said.

"It looks like the walnut crop is gone because it had a firestorm right over it. I am not sure what is going to happen to those walnut trees at this stage, I am seeking advice from others in the industry.

"The chestnut trees are in reasonable shape but they were flowering at the time, so I wouldn't think a firestorm like that would help with the pollen flow. It is difficult to say.

"We all need rain desperately. Some of our irrigation is down and it will take time to get it back up again. The fencing is down as well."

Mr Moxham said the things they lost in the fires can be replaced and he was more concerned about his neighbours.

"These are things that we can rebuild over time so are reasonable optimistic going forward but we are concerned about our neighbours in Nerriga and Sassafras, where I know at least a dozen or more homes have been lost," he said.

"Some historic buildings at Sassafras, like the old post office and the old farmhouse on the road, have been lost. This has changed the look of the community forever and it is sad because we all all appreciate historic buildings in the landscape, so it is a shame that they have gone."

He has praise for the RFS.

"It was very difficult to get any other support from the RFS, who I can only praise," he said.

"We had two fires converge and all the resources needed to be in some other places as well.

"We are grateful for what we have come through with. The Nerriga and Sassafras communities are resilient and they will go on, but it is a difficult time right now.

"We were able to visit our property yesterday. It is a seared landscape. There are only various shades on black. The impact of the fire now is fallen trees, so I don't expect that road to be open for some time."

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, a spokesperson from the RFS Shoalhaven Fire Control Centre confirmed property losses in Sassafras and Nerriga.

"Building Impact Assessment crews are assessing damage at Nerriga as we speak," he said.

He said the fire has crossed Main Road 92 and had travelled a considerable distance to the north.

"It is in behind Bendura Dam and Ettrema.

"The size of the fire has increased dramatically. We are starting to look at containment lines at Tolwong Road and the Shoalhaven River and there is potentially a risk to dwellings to the east of that area, at Burier, Budgong and potentially into the Kangaroo Valley. "

He did not also rule out the fire travelling to Bungonia.

"That is a while out, but if you looked at how that fire progressed on Saturday, that is a possibility," he said.

"There is still active fire in Nerriga area but crews are aggressively mopping that up."

Meanwhile, there is a fundraiser for those in the Nerriga Community who have lost everything on the Nerriga Community Facebook page.

"We know there have been several houses lost as well as livestock injured or killed. Any money raised from this fundraiser will be given to those directly affected by this fire. Let's make their Christmas and the New Year the best it can be," a spokesperson on that page says.
