The Morton fire broke out on Saturday night, when the Currowan Fire jumped from Kangaroo Valley.
Cherie Donnelly was among the lucky residents who had their houses spared by the fire.
The Morton fire devastated several towns and villages including Bundanoon, Wingello, Penrose, Meryla, Exeter, Avoca, Fitzroy Falls and surrounding areas.

Residents in several streets, including Yuille and Evelyn Avenues in Bundanoon, lost their homes.
Ms Donnelly said the sudden news of the fire was "heartwrenching".
"Bundanoon is my town, my community, my family and the thought of it going down to nothing was absolutely heartbreaking," she said on the weekend.
Ms Donnelly said she was "very grateful" for the efforts of the emergency services, after her house had a close call with the Morton fire.
"The fire came within seven metres of the dwelling," she said.
"I simply do not have the words to express the deepest gratitude I have for all the amazing men and women out on the fire grounds working so incredibly hard to protect our lives and homes. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
"Unfortunately, not everyone has had good news... and the threat to our town and our wonderful neighbours is not yet over.
"Sending much love and strength to all those who need it."
The Morton fire is more than 21,000 hectares in size and is out of control.
The nearby Currowan fire is burning at more than 304,000 hectares and is also out of control.
