Goulburn has had some of the worst air quality in the world for many weeks now and we are told that one way of coping has been to wear P2 masks. But this is not the case for some, such as those suffering Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Denis Lawless is one such person. At 72, he has been suffering from COPD (formerly known as emphysema) and other conditions for the past decade. He says he has been left without access to proper assistance from health authorities over the past month.

Pictures and Popcorn at the Pool makes a return at the Goulburn Aquatic and Leisure Centre on Saturday, January 18. Unlike previous years, the entry to this year's event will be by donation. "In light of the current bushfires that are impacting a significant area of New South Wales, entry to the event will be by donation. All donations will go directly to bushfire relief efforts," Angela Remington, Goulburn Mulwaree Council's events officer, said.
The decision to turn the ticketed 24th Australian Blues Music Festival into a free event has been taken in response to the bushfire crisis, organisers say. "We have decided to turn it into a free event so those who have been dealing with this can escape to the festival to have some healing time out, whilst enjoying some beautiful blues music, within a supportive community," said event producer Scott McDuff from Australian National Events (ANE).
In sport, a hat-trick from Goulburn hockey legend Glenn Turner was not enough to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat for the ACT. Up against NSW, who have now won the Open Men's division 12 times, in the Australian Indoor Hockey Festival grand final at the Illawarra Hockey Stadium on January 7, the ACT was unable to scrape across the line in a nailbiting tie-break.
