Lake George RFS zone deputy incident controller, Inspector Chris Allen said the outbreak at the end of Coghills Road, off Sandy Point Road, north of Windellama, was called in at 3.20pm.
A naval helicopter flying over the area on its return from Nowra, reported the fire.
It is half a hectare in size but a quarter-hectare is active.
Inspector Allen said three helicopters were water bombing the fire, which was burning in grass and light-timbered country.
Two Windellama RFS crews, comprising eight personnel are also on scene.
"We're confident, with the aerial suppression that ground crews will be able to get in and mop it up quickly," Inspector Allen said.
No property is under threat. The cause is not known at this stage.
