The Cairns man told The Post he fell asleep at the wheel of his Hino truck as he was travelling in the northbound lane, some 10 km south of Goulburn.
Police, RFS and NSW Fire and Rescue and two Ambulance crews were called to the scene at 1pm.
Sergeant Jeff Morgan said the small refrigerated truck left the road, rolled onto its left side, with the centre of the cabin smashing into a tree. It came to rest against an armco railing.
"The trees stopped it from going any further. He's very lucky," Sergeant Morgan said.
Fire services were initially advised of flames at the crash scene but these had self-extinguished by the time they arrived. Diesel had leaked from the truck and the brigades stayed as a precaution.
Ambulance crews were not required.
The 51-year-old driver said he was returning from delivering a load to Canberra when he "dozed off."
"When I woke up, the truck was out of control and I just watched everything unfold. I'm lucky to get off so lightly," he said.
The man suffered a gash to the head.
A salvage team was also on scene to clear the wreckage. Only a portion of one lane was closed while they and emergency services were on scene.
