Two students, Grace and Elias Toparis from Mulwaree High School, were finalists in the competition.
Judges Patricia Groves, Mark Croker and Josh Matthews oversaw the competition.
The contestants responded two impromptu questions and were assessed on their answers.
The questions were: "stress and mental rate are in the top three youth issues. What actions would you take to support your peer's mental health? Identify some available resources", and "do you think the Federal Government is doing enough to control the internet and social media? Why?"
The pair were also judged on leadership, personality, general knowledge as well as citizenship and cultural interest.
Grace and Elias each delivered a five minute prepared speech on human wellness and politics replacing religion for young people.
Judging panel chair Josh Matthews said all three judges were very pleased with the high standard set by both Grace and Elias and both students had clear views on both community and national issues.
Grace will now go through to the next round in Wollongong on March 28.
