Two new NSW Government papers are now open for consultation online: Cleaning Up Our Act: Redirecting the Future of Plastic in NSW and the NSW 20-Year Waste Strategy.
"The NSW Government is changing the conversation around waste and plastics. I've heard so many people in our community say they want to see action on single-use plastics and increased recycling," Mrs Tuckerman said.
"There are so many great waste-reducing initiatives already happening here at a local level and it is fantastic to now be able to channel that passion and ingenuity into our plastics plan and long-term waste strategy."
The NSW waste management sector is valued at around $1.5 billion.
It employs more than 10,000 people and there is scope for this to grow, particularly in regional NSW.
The discussion paper Cleaning Up Our Act: Redirecting the Future of Plastic in NSW sets a clear pathway to reduce single-use, unnecessary and problematic plastics in NSW and help build our circular economy.
This discussion paper sets the stage for the phase-out of some single-use plastics, tripling the proportion of plastic recycled by 2030, reducing plastic litter by a quarter and making our state a leader in plastics research and development.
Reforms up for discussion in the Issues Paper on the NSW 20-Year Waste Strategy include new state-wide waste reduction targets, separating food and garden waste from red-lidded bins so we can better recover the benefits of organic waste through composting and energy recovery, and increasing the use of recycled content in state and local infrastructure projects.
