On March 31, roughly 105 cubic metres of locally-source concrete was poured as work to construct the floor plate of the new four-storey building continued.

When completed, the lower ground floor of the new building will incorporate a number of critical departments.

These include the Emergency Department (ED) with its ED Short Stay and Ambulatory areas and Ambulance Bays, Medical Imaging; Patient Flow and Mental Health Triage and Emergency Service, Security, Mortuary and plant and communications rooms.

The concrete took roughly four hours to pour, and required 15 concrete trucks and one concrete boom pump. Additional work with the pour required two more hours, and the concrete was left to 'cure' over the following days.

The second ground core and lift slab are expected to be complete early this week.

Preparing for a concrete pour of this size requires specific considerations. Preparatory earthworks were undertaken beforehand, exact estimates were produced on the amount of concrete required, and in-ground services, edge boards, and steel reinforcement were installed.

Similarly, the weather, concrete mix, and consistency were also taken into account.

This is the latest step in the large redevelopment project after the first sod was turned in October last year.

The expected date of completion on the project is late 2021 or early 2022.
