The Top Gun event was inspired by a Penrith Golf Club competition of the same name, which pits 19 of the club's top-performing players against each other in the final, and eliminates one player for each hole played.

The last player standing after the 18^th hole will be crowned the club Top Gun for that year.

"For more than 10 years the Penrith Golf Club has enjoyed great success with a Members Only event they refer to as Top Gun," the Goulburn Golf Club said in a Facebook post.

"This concept has been proven for more than a decade now at Penrith to be the most popular event on the club's golfing and social calendar."

To qualify for the final, players have three months starting from July 1 to submit at least five of their best scorecards from this period. It will become a yearly fixture on the club's calendar.

Club professional, Andrew Grove, said the most enticing aspect of the competition is that anybody from the club can win.

"It's a competition that anyone can win. It can be a junior, a man, or a woman," he said.

"That's because the scoring isn't off the stick, it goes off the handicap."

Throughout the COVID-19 lockdown, many sporting clubs were forced to shut down and have suffered negative repercussions since.

As golf can be played while social distancing, clubs in NSW were not required to close, although there were restrictions placed on courses.

The last three months, Grove said, has actually benefited the club.

"If anything it's helped us," he said. "Guys and girls who normally play other sports, they haven't been able to play. So we've had a lot of those people come across and play golf.

"Numbers have increased, there are a lot more social players, and what I've seen so far there's a lot of people joining."

This influx of players, Grove hopes, will make the scramble for a spot in the Top Gun final very competitive.

To be eligible for Top Gun, members must pay a $10 registration fee and a subsequent $2 fee for every round they wish to include towards qualifying. The best two rounds from each player will be used to calculate the top 19 for the final.

The qualifying period will end on September 30, with the final expected to take place on a Sunday late in the year.
