But have you ever considered a companion of the feathered variety?
A chicken adoption event run by Let The Ladies Go will return to the Southern Highlands and Goulburn this weekend.
The aim is to re-home chickens as pets, as opposed to breeding and producing eggs.
Let the Ladies Go founder Tania Daykin said there was a "misconception" about the egg industry.
"We are about ending egg consumption and bringing awareness to people of how cruel it is," she said.
"Chickens are a bird that lays eggs six to 12 times a year.
"We've genetically mutated them to lay them every day."
Most of the rescue chickens came from farms, after they've laid eggs for about 18 months.
Ms Daykin said one of her main motivations with farmers and the general public was education.
"I'm working with everyone to bring awareness," she said.
Ms Daykin said both the education and rescue component of Let the Ladies Go offered a sense of purpose.
"There's no reward in it for me. It's the satisfaction of knowing we're doing the right thing," she said.
People who are interested are asked to fill out an application prior to the event.
Events will be held in Mittagong and Goulburn on Saturday, July 4.
Organisers will either approve or deny applications, and will provide a location and time to accepted applicants prior to the event.
Attendees are asked to bring cages or roomy boxes to transport the chickens home.
There is a limit of six chickens per household.
Visit the Let The Ladies Go Facebook page to fill out an application form prior to the event.
