It is an ongoing $20,000 investment awarded by the gallery to artists born and/or living locally.
She feels that it is the right time to start with the initiative at a time when everyone is affected due to COVID-19.
Earlier this year, the gallery did a show with marble sculptor Alex Seton who was born and raised in Taralga.
"While doing that show, we realised that there is a wonderful opportunity for artists to return back to where they were born and had spent their early years," Gina Mobayed, director at Goulburn Regional Art Gallery, said.
The Goulburn Regional Art Gallery has invited applications from artists for The Good Initiative.
The inaugural recipient of The Good Initiative will receive $20,000 and ongoing support to produce a solo exhibition at the Gallery in 2021.
It is biennial and responsive, evolving at each announcement to respond to what artists need at that time.
It places artists, their development, and the sustainability of their practice at its heart.
It is open for applications from artists or artist collaboratives, born and or living locally who are working within the first fifteen years of their artistic career.
Local is defined as within a 120km radius of Goulburn CBD, a map can be found here.
Mentorship and professional development will be made available to the recipient from the time of awarding to the presentation of the exhibition and beyond.
The initiative has been championed by an individual donor who makes an extraordinary, ongoing commitment to living Australian artists.
The applications can be submitted until 5 pm on Monday, August 3.
It will be assessed by a panel comprising:
- Gina Mobayed, Director at Goulburn Regional Art Gallery
- Clothilde Bullen, Senior Curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Collections and Exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney
- Melissa Keys, Curator at Buxton Contemporary, Melbourne
