It was a great privilege to welcome the Governor-General his Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (retired) and his wife her Excellency Mrs Linda Hurley to Goulburn on Thursday to recognise the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II.

We marked the occasion with a medal presentation to nine surviving World War II veterans who still reside in Goulburn, which was a lovely occasion held at the Goulburn RSL Club.
I also had the opportunity to take the Governor-General on a tour of Goulburn to highlight the outstanding projects underway in our city, and the continuing growth of the region. We visited the Park Road Memorial Avenue Wall, and Goulburn East Primary School for a wonderful performance from the students.
The visit concluded with a tour of the new Rocky Hill War Memorial Museum which was well received, and a wreath laying at Rocky Hill War Memorial.
The day was a fitting way to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII, and a great honour to have an opportunity for us to showcase our City and region to the Governor General and Mrs Hurley.
Flooding effects
The Wollondilly and Mulwaree Rivers have receded, and most of the debris has now been cleared, but it was a wild and wet weekend in our region.
Within the city we had over 120mm of rain recorded between Friday and Monday, with reports of 200mm+ in some different areas around the tablelands. Thank you to the local SES unit and our staff who worked to close roads, keep residents safe and to provide timely information to the community.
We have obviously had significant road and infrastructure damage occur, and it is disappointing that this has occurred so soon after the February flooding - however we will never say no to the rain!
This damage is all being assessed by our teams, and we will be putting in a claim for disaster assistance for this repair work. In February much of the damage occurred on roads to the western area of the LGA, however this time we have had damage to the south and east, including significant pavement lifting on the Oallen Ford Bridge over the Shoalhaven River. This part of the bridge is under the jurisdiction of Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council, but we will be supporting them to get it to a drivable standard as soon as possible.
Our infrastructure along the Wollondilly River Walkway is for the most part still in good condition, with less damage to the solar lights than in February. Potholes have formed on roads in rural locations and around the City, so please take care and drive with caution while our work crews get around to move repairs.
We'll keep the community updated on our application for disaster assistance, and the repair works to be undertaken in the coming months.
