A Good Hope man accused of murder has been refused bail.
William Allan, 34, of Glenroy Road in Good Hope, pleaded not guilty to one count of murder. An application for conditional bail was presented to Goulburn Local Court on August 12. Allan appeared from custody via audio visual link.
The court heard that Allan stabbed Brendan Oldfield, 35, in the chest during an argument between January 12 and 13, 2020. Solicitor Rod Boyd said his client had acted in self defense.
Mr Boyd said this was a "matter where self defense is raised". He said the prosecution would have to prove beyond reasonable doubt that self defense wasn't involved.
He said they did not have a strong case against his client.
Police prosecutor Johnson said Allan had stabbed the victim once and caused his death. He said the "response couldn't be considered reasonable".
He said Allan had taken a knife from Oldfield and stabbed him once in the chest. He said the victim was unarmed at that point.
Magistrate Geraldine Beattie refused the application for bail on the basis Allan hadn't "shown cause".
She said the matter could result in life imprisonment.
The Magistrate said Allan had wounds to his right knee, abdomen and chest. In a written submission presented to the court, a doctor's report claimed the wounds on Allan's chest and upper abdomen were self inflicted.
She said there was "other evidence" in the case which consisted of phone conversations and messages between Allan and his family and friends.
She said during a telephone call after the incident Allan had said "I can't call the cops on myself" and on a separate call "Brendan stabbed me so I stabbed him back".
The Magistrate said someone else called the police which was unusual in a self defense case.
The crime scene and post-mortem reports were still outstanding and had not been presented to the court.
The case will return to Goulburn Local Court on October 14.
