Scott Jamieson Moseley appeared before Goulburn Local Court on August 19 and was convicted of 16 counts of dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception.
The court heard on March 18, 2020 Moseley stole a Visa card from a staff member at a retail store on Auburn Street. Moseley then spent $533.99 at multiple stores around Goulburn between 12:22pm and 3:30pm that day.
Solicitor Rodney Boyd said since arrest his client had displayed a "level of honesty not previously seen."
Magistrate Geraldine Beattie said Moseley had gone on a "spree". She said the 16 charges reflected the number of times Moseley had used the stolen card.
The Magistrate said the victim had worked hard for that money.
"Visa payWave relies on honesty, at the moment when people aren't using cash much due to COVID-19 it's more of an issue," she said.
"This is an offence that frequently comes before the courts."
Moseley was sentenced to pay compensation to the victim, a 12-month supervised intensive community corrections order and, 225 hours community service.
