Some 100 people were treated to the first event in the 2020 commemorations, marking 200 years since NSW Governor Lachlan Macquarie and his party explored the Goulburn plains.
Lieder Theatre president and local historian Jennifer Lamb's play, Journey Through Country, is based on Macquarie's diary about his explorations but also highlights the presence of First Nations people, their role in naming places and reaction to the strange visitors.
Ms Lamb said coronavirus restrictions put paid to an indoor performance but the outdoor venue was perfect.
The play was performed in a picturesque setting around the state heritage listed Mulwaree River railway viaduct on Saturday afternoon.
People had pre-booked for the play, for which numbers were restricted.
The production featured a strong line-up of actors including Ryan Paranthoiene as Macquarie, David Rayner as Charles Throsby, Muffy Hedges as 'Woman' and Brian Hill as The Reverend Robert Cartwright. The Lieder's talented group of young actors also featured.
The spacious and lush green outdoor setting proved a hit as people gathered for a relaxing afternoon's entertainment. Rain stayed away just long enough.
Ms Lamb said the theatre was planning a three-week season for 'Journey,' but had to restrict it to a single performance.
Nevertheless, the production was filmed by Danny Gwynne of Field and Film as a permanent record and for showings to facilitate discussion.
The play is just one event in a packed program of commemorations which includes a visit by NSW Governor, The Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC, exhibitions at the Rocky Hill museum and Riversdale, historical walks and talks and much more.
