That's what Relay for Life is all about and while it might be a little bit different this year, students at Goulburn High School are excited to be a part of it.

This year the school will hold its own mini Relay for Life for students and staff.

There has already been plenty of student interest, including a group of several Year 12 students who have been involved in Relay For Life since Year 7.

Relay for Life raises funds and awareness for the Cancer Council.

And it is a cause that is close to the heart of many at Goulburn High School.

Cancer survivor and Goulburn High School teacher Catherine Kelly is the Goulburn and surrounds ambassador for Relay for Life this year.

She was nominated to be ambassador by one of the Year 10 students at the school.

"I'm meant to be there to do the speech to encourage people to participate, to get out there and have a go and let them know all's not lost, you can still get through all this," she said.

"I'm a survivor so [I hope I can] boost the confidence of everybody else out there going through the same thing."

Catherine said the school "had always been there" over the past six years she has been involved in Relay for Life and the students were keen to be involved again this year.

"It's been an incredible journey. Get out there and support the cause."

Goulburn High's Relay for Life will include many of the traditional Relay For Life events over the 24 hours.

Teacher and organiser Amie-Lea Friend said there would be remembrance and candlelight ceremonies "to reflect on the loved ones we've lost but also in celebration of the ones who have survived".

The school will create a wall of honour during the event where students can bring photos of a family member, friend or idol who has battled cancer.

Goulburn High's Relay for Life will start at 5pm on Friday, October 23 and will finish on Saturday afternoon.

The event will be for staff and students only, with no members of the public allowed to attend due to COVID-19 restrictions.

"Particularly during COVID we still need to go ahead with an event like this because the cancer council are not getting as many funds as what they would do," Amie-Lea said.

"As a school this is going to bring us together a lot more. It's a great way, particularly with well being, to be there for each other."

The fundraising event is now supported by millions of people across the globe with the money going towards research, prevention and support programs.

Tutt Bryant Hire will also be donating a Light Tower for the school to use at the event.
