The local rugby league club, which has been rebuilt and revamped following the initial COVID-19 lockdowns, released its list of senior coaching staff in mid-December.
Foremost among the appointments for the new-look Bulldogs are the duo of Tyson Greenwood and Jesse Martin, who will jointly coach the first grade side.
While Greenwood is a born-and-bred Goulburn local, who has played for the Bulldogs for the length of his league career, Martin is a new addition to the club, who was signed ahead of the 2020 season.
Having spent his early years with the Queanbeyan Blues, Martin signed on for Goulburn after several years playing for various Sydney sides, including a stint with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs' reserve grade team.
With plenty of playing experience but little coaching time between them, the pair are eager to take on the new challenges which lie ahead.
"We've got a good group here, the vibe's been unreal for the last few weeks," Greenwood said.
"Everyone's having a lot of fun, everyone's putting in [the effort] too. We're getting good numbers, a lot of juniors and a lot of women too which is great to see."
Martin, who is still acclimating himself with the club, is enjoying getting to know the players and said the coaching job is a "good opportunity."
The unusual idea to have two coaches in the first grade competition came about as a result of Greenwood and Martin's hesitance to take on the role solo.
"As soon as we looked towards 2021, a few of the boys got ahold of Jesse and the committee approached him because we wanted to keep him," Greenwood said.
"We were a bit sheepish to coach by ourselves, so we decided to chuck two heads together and see how we go."
It is too early in the season to get a firm idea of which players will likely make up the first grade side in 2021, but both head coaches feel optimistic about the amount of young talent the club has cultivated in recent years.
"We've already seen a lot of good young juniors come through," Martin said.
"During the pre-season in January-February, we'll see how they go through the trials and see if they can play against the bigger bodies. But numbers are good and they'll probably get better in 2021."
So far, the only major losses suffered by the club are the Cornish brothers, who have signed on with the Young Cherrypickers in 2021.
Despite the loss of three elite players, Greenwood is comforted by the depth of Goulburn's lists.
"Our Under 19s have made the grand final the last three years, so there's plenty of young guys coming through there," he said.
"There's a couple off with rep squads doing pre-season, but if they're unsuccessful they'll come back and really boost our squad.
"It'll be rather juniors-based next year, but we're going to set goals and see if we achieve them."
Joining Greenwood and Martin on the Bulldogs' coaching roster are:
- Michael Campton-Smith (Reserve Grade)
- Shane McCallum (Under 19s)
- Wayne Blackwell (Women's Open Tackle)
- Vaughn Winnel (Ladies League Tag)
- Sophie Broadhead (Ladies League Tag)
