Australia Day ceremonies will be held in the Upper Lachlan Shire again this year, albeit with a couple of changes.
The Taralga event, which normally takes place as part of the Taralga Rodeo, has been cancelled for this year and merged into the Crookwell event, and the Gunning event, which normally takes place in Barbour Park, has been moved to Gunning Shire Hall.
Council general manager Colleen Worthy said that it was unfortunate some of the shire's events have been affected by COVID safety measures but that it was important to ensure COVID health and safety measures are observed.
"We want to see the Taralga Rodeo back and hopefully it will be next year. We'd also like to see the Gunning Australia Day ceremonies at Barbour Park, but at the moment the park is more difficult to police COVID safety measures," she said.
Winners of the various Upper Lachlan Shire Australia Day Awards will be announced at the Gunning and Crookwell ceremonies, and two Gunning residents will become Australian citizens.
This year's Australia Day Ambassador for the Upper Lachlan Shire is acclaimed theatrical director Sandra Bates.
Sandra has directed productions at the Sydney Opera House, the Ensemble Theatre, Glen Street Theatre, Canberra Theatre Centre, Theatre Royal, The Comedy Theatre, Melbourne in addition to touring many shows around Australia. At the Ensemble Theatre alone she has directed over 100 productions across 27 years.
Sandra was made a Member in the Order of Australia in 2001 and was awarded the Variety Club Heart Award for her contribution to theatre in 2002. In 2005 Sandra was presented with the SBW Foundation Achievement Award for services to theatre in 2007 Sandra was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Sydney Theatre Critics.
