My commitment and appreciation of this country is something I embrace every day of the year.
This is not to say that I am proud of everything that has happened historically, or everything that is happening now, and no doubt there will be things in the future that I won't like.
But this is the country I was born and live in and I feel blessed.
For me loving Australia is not about partying 'big time' on January 26. It is about embracing my homeland year-round.

However, as one who was born and raised in the Land Down Under I totally appreciate the sense of honour that will be felt on Australia Day by those who become Australian citizens.
I also appreciate the sense of pride by those who are recognised through Australia Day awards for the wonderful contributions they have made to their country.
While these honours are set aside for only a few each year, Australians as a whole can be inspired and motivated to make individual contributions for the betterment of our country.
Too often we get caught up in the fight for big business and politicians to shape our existence, but we have the capacity to also make a valuable impact.
As far as I am concerned, loving and valuing this country in which I am so fortunate to live is about being mindful of my own personal behaviour.
In fact, what we contribute individually to the country can have a huge impact on the rewards we do...or don't...reap.
For me personally I recognise several positive things I can do. These include:
- Valuing the beautiful environment - never littering and even picking up rubbish left behind by others.
- Equality - treating others the way I would like to be treated.
- Consideration - reaching out to others in their times of need.
- Appreciation - exploring the natural attractions of this country but leaving behind nothing but footprints.
- Respect - learning to live in harmony regardless of cultural background or beliefs.
- Forgiveness - remember none of us is perfect, but we are all capable of learning and changing our behaviours for a better future.
- Gratitude - learn to appreciate the good things in life no matter how big or small.
