Elsewhere, market and food stall operators set up early, veteran and vintage cars rolled through the gates and SES and RFS volunteers readied to chat with the many interested onlookers.
The day kicked off with a free barbecue breakfast hosted by Goulburn Rotary. There were train rides for the kids and later, free entry at the nearby Aquatic Centre.
Crowd size was down on previous years, possibly due to COVID-19 restrictions and the heat, but the atmosphere was upbeat.
A host of youth talent kept people entertained, including the band, Leaving Reality. During the ceremony, teenage singer and songwriter Isy Cappo impressed with her rendition of I am Australian, while Wade Pik read the poem, The Story of Australia. On conclusion, Darcy Lamb sang the Australian national anthem.
Earlier, members of The Bridge Choir jigged as they performed four songs. Clare Jones, a music therapist, leads the all abilities Goulburn Mulwaree group.
Goulburn's hockey international Glenn Turner was this year's Australia Day ambassador and struck a chord with the crowd as he spoke about his travels and the good fortune the country enjoys.
