However, I would like to take the opportunity to highlight successes within the District over the last 12 months, looking toward a post-Covid time where we as a district will be increasing these initiatives, working heavily with our local community including other government and non-government providers.
- The Man walk - occurs every Tuesday starting at the Marsden Weir Park. This is a great opportunity for the PD to work with Mission Australia. The activity is a slow-paced walk where males in the community are encouraged to come along and walk, talk and share on the Goulburn walking track. It is a mental health initiative encouraging males to get fit and to meet other members of the community including our local Officer in Charge, Insp Matt Hinton. If you're interested in joining this group, please contact Inspector Matt Hinton at Goulburn Police station.
- PACC - Over the last 18 months the Goulburn Sector has commenced a Police Aboriginal Consultation Committee. The aim of this group is to develop and enhance the Police relationship with our local Aboriginal Community. It meets four times a year and is used as a forum that permits both police and Aboriginal people to address issues associated with crime, crime prevention and community safety, building a strong community relationship. If you are interested in joining this group, please contact Inspector Alison Brennan at Goulburn Police Station. Similar meetings are also held in Yass and Moss Vale with the assistance of local councils.
- Pop-Up Policing - this initiative was on hold for 2020, however at the end of the year the Yass sector and Traffic and highway Patrol attended the Hume Hwy at Yass. At the start of 2021 this initiative has restarted, the aim being to increase our coverage and meeting with the community where there are presently no officers stationed or no local police station. In January this was re-launched at Caragabal with future dates and times being developed for the rest of 2021.
- Youth projects with the PCYC - the Police District has three PCYCs in Young, Goulburn and Mittagong. Our Goulburn PCYC will commence an outreach program to Yass in Term 1 2021, which will increase coverage. The programs run from the PCYCs are the "Rise up" and "Fit for" programs, including 10 potential programs depending on the need of young people in our community. The fit-for-life program run at all the PCYCs on the following dates starting week 2 of Term 1: Goulburn PCYC- Tuesday and Wednesday; Yass (at Yass high school) - Monday; Young PCYC - Tuesday; and Mittagong PCYC - Tuesday
Within these programs our local police, Police Rescue and Traffic and Highway Patrol work with the local youth and PCYC to develop our relationships and assist them in building their skills, creating opportunities for them to be the best they can be.
All these programs and other community engagements are regularly advertised on our Facebook page, called The Hume Police District.
