The Shop 2580 gift card is expected to launch in April. The gift card will enable amounts from $10 to $1000 to be loaded onto the card which can then be spent at locally owned stores across Goulburn.
Businesses have been encouraged to register their interest now for the program. Shop 2580 gift cards will be sold at a number of stores across the region.
The cards are part of the Why Leave Town initiative which operates in more than 140 postcodes. So far, more than $10 million in loaded cards have seen sold nationally.
It is estimated that with every $100 spent locally, $180 will be injected into the Goulburn community.
Mayor Bob Kirk said the cards were a way of "keeping money in town".
"As a council we have been looking for ways in which to support local businesses, and we felt that the Shop 2580 gift cards would be a brilliant program to combine with other organisations on to roll out," he said.
"We hope that instead of buying a gift for your family or friends online, you instead choose to buy a Shop 2580 card that will support local businesses.
"It's a great way for big businesses in the region to also support others - I hope you may choose to reward employees with a Shop 2580 gift card in future."
Goulburn Chamber of Commerce president Darrell Weekes said the cards were a "tangible way to encourage local business".
"Usually gift cards are purchased as presents, staff bonuses or incentives, but can only be redeemed at one big corporate store; the Shop 2580 card will allow the recipient to spend the money at 90 plus stores around Goulburn".
Business sign up for Chamber of Commerce members is free, or $120 for non-members.
