Member Robyn Simpson was presented with a Life Membership for her contributions to the club and Garden Clubs of Australia.
Guest speaker Julie Geale, from Julie's Garden Emporium, addressed the group. She discussed plants and caring for them as the climate changes. She also brought a large collection of plants for sale.
Ms Geale told members about an old method of planting, that is now becoming quite popular, where slate is buried in the soil between plants. The slate helps to protect the plants and puts minerals into the soil.
Her tips to keep plants cool in summer included:
- Elevating pots for airflow
- The use of old cement pots instead of terracotta
- Watering after dark as plants drink at night.
- Planting lower in the pot
- Using taller plants to shade smaller ones
- Watching the sun to move plants accordingly
Ms Geale told members she would soon open a shop in Combermere Street, where she would also offer workshops.
Flower of the month was won by Trish Oberg with a bunch of lavender coloured sweet peas. Raffles were won by Rosalie Williams, Moira McGinity and Maree Murphy.
The club has a coach trip planned for April 27 to Walcott Garden in Red Hill, and the Arboretum.
