While the plague is well-established out west, there are signs they are on the march towards the coast, with the new estates at Marys Mount the worst affected in the Tablelands at the moment.
Owner of pest control service P Off Pest, Kym Bennett, said the mouse plague has definitely begun.
"Usually we don't see mice until winter time, but this year, it has started so early due to the cool summer," Ms Bennett said.
"Homes in Marys Mount are getting smashed with mice and I have mice jobs out there almost every day.
"It will get worse if we don't get on top of it."
Mice love water, food and shelter, so even though it is impossible to prevent the mice from coming, steps can be taken to stop them from entering homes.
"Make sure any holes in your home are sealed up, especially in the roof," Ms Bennett said.
"They can squeeze through a 10 cent coin sized hole.
"It's a good idea to purchase a door seal because a lot of them come through there.
"They also like going in through garage doors.
"Make sure pet food is sealed off too."
She said other ways include taking care of your home's surroundings.
"Keep the area around your home rubbish free," she said.
"Make sure your garden bed is well kept, mow your lawns and eliminate water as much as you can."
You can call a pest controller if things get out of control, but if you want, you can also get rid of them yourself.
"It's about trapping them, baiting them and trying to get the numbers down before they start breeding because they do it so quickly," Ms Bennett said.
"One pair of mice can have over 500 mice in a season."
Mice can also appear in the CBD and cause trouble for restaurant and cafe owners.
