Adam Brooks, the former mining minister who is running in the northwest seat of Braddon at the May 1 poll, has pledged to vigorously defend the allegations.

Police on Thursday said they had charged a 45-year-old man with failing to adequately store ammunition as required by the state's Firearms Act.

Mr Brooks is expected to front Davenport Magistrates Court at a later date.

In a campaign where candidates from both major parties have been embroiled in drama, Labor called for Mr Brooks to be disendorsed.

The premier said he was made aware a week ago that Mr Brooks had a conversation with police.

"At that stage, the matter of whether or not he would be summonsed wasn't clear," Mr Gutwein said.

"I believe in the rule of law and I believe that justice should take its course.

"He deserves the presumption of innocence.

"I'm not downplaying this. Any matter to do with firearms or ammunition is a serious matter but he will be vigorously defending this and we should allow this matter to take its course."

Mr Brooks quit parliament two years ago citing health issues after an integrity commission cleared him of misusing information relating to his portfolio.

He has previously drawn big votes in Braddon, where the Liberals hold three of five seats.

The Liberals recently lost candidate Dean Ewington, who pulled out of the race in the southern seat of Franklin after his anti-lockdown views gained attention.

Labor, meanwhile, had state party president Ben McGregor quit as a candidate in Clark over "inappropriate" text messages sent seven years ago.

Labor on Friday unveiled a $137 million health package designed to tackle waiting lists and employ an extra 65 permanent doctors and 150 nurses and midwives.
