The contribution of older residents was put in the spotlight for the launch of Goulburn Senior's Week.
The festival kicked off at the Goulburn Worker's Club on April 19 with mayor Bob Kirk, Wendy Tuckerman MP and other special guests present.
The annual event celebrates the valuable contribution of seniors in the community and promotes active involvement with a range of activities planned for the week .
Maureen Symmonds and Senior Constable Barbara Beard were jointly awarded the prestigious Senior of the Year award. Finalists included Sue Weeks and Rosemary Turner.
Ms Symmonds was recognised for her work with the Marulan and District Lions Club, the Cancer Council, the Primary Schools Reading Action Program, the Breakfast Club, as well as supporting local aged care residents and families following loss from miscarriage and still birth.
Senior Constable Beard, who was not present, received the award for her work with at risk youth.
Mayor Kirk said she was an "invaluable support to local youth services and an irreplaceable link between the community and the police when it came to young people".
The coveted Senior Community Group of the Year award was taken out by the Marulan and District Lions Club for 40 years of service. The Home-Start Volunteer Home Visiting Program was named finalist.
At the launch, guest speaker Tina Wilson discussed her recent exhibition 'Art of Aging' which celebrated the life of older people through portraits of Goulburn residents. The photographer praised the "unsung heroes" of Goulburn and the tireless work they do for the community.
Attendees enjoyed a special surprise performance. Country musician Roo Arcus had the crowd spellbound with an acoustic set of three songs.
In an address, Ms Tuckerman emphasised the importance of the week to the community.
"Senior's Week is about getting out, enjoying activities, and enjoying each others company," she said.
