That's not all.
Imagine feeling isolated and having acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) at the same time.
That's what Goulburn resident Rowena McLean had to go through, not once but three times in the space of four and a half years.
The mother of two had to go to both Canberra and Westmead Hospital for treatment which was a struggle for her.
"Having to move to Sydney was incredibly isolating," Ms McLean.
"It's a matter of being so far away from my family and my little girl."
"My whole world was back home.
"My parents had even moved there in 2017 just after my first diagnosis."
Another impact of living in a regional area for her was the amount of travel involved, especially when the chemotherapy made her tired.
"At least once a month, I go to Sydney to see a specialist," Ms McLean said.
"I can't drive that distance without feeling lethargic.
"I have trouble keeping my eyes on the road as my mind tends to wander."
She was heavily supported by the Leukaemia Foundation during her journey with blood cancer.
Throughout her time away from home, she stayed at the foundation's accommodation facilities.
"Because of the Leukemia Foundation, I haven't been out of pocket that much," she said.
Blood cancer pulls the rug out from underneath families and in many cases, treatment must start within 24 hours of diagnosis.
Those in rural or regional areas may need to relocate for months or years of treatment, leaving everyone and everything behind.
There are many other like Ms McLean who is in that situation.
In fact, four in 10 Australians diagnosed with blood cancer live in regional and remote areas like Goulburn.
Last year, the Leukaemia Foundation supported around 540 rural and regional families with a place to call home while receiving treatment in the city.
