On May 20, Upper Lachlan councillors voted unanimously to put on public exhibition the proposed name "Trevor Picker Bridge" for the new bridge at Kangaroo Creek, Bigga. They have also put out a call for expressions of interest.
Mr Picker, 91, was killed in a multi-vehicle car crash near Binda in 2019.
His family's property, Hillcreston at Bigga is renowned Australia-wide for its superfine wool growing. In 1985 Mr Picker set the world wool record when Hillcrest fetched 17,000 cents for an extra superfine (15.5 micron) merino bale. He received a total of four world records throughout his life.
Mr Picker's four sons - Danny, Murray, Grant and Brett - have followed in his footsteps and stayed in the industry.
In a submission to council, Brett Picker said his father lived his entire life in Bigga, was very well known and highly respected throughout the shire.
He said Mr Picker "was instrumental in putting our local area on to the national and global stage for wool production."
"He held four world records and was passionate about promoting the wool industry and dedicated his life to it.
"We would be honoured if council would recognise our father in such an incredible manner."
Danny Picker welcomed the submission to name the bridge after his father.
"It's nice to acknowledge someone who contributed so much to the wool industry over 90 years," he said.
The replacement of the Kangaroo Creek Bridge is expected to cost $1.93 million with 50 per cent funded by the Federal Government.
The council will accept expressions of interest until 4pm on June 28, 2021. Submissions can be sent via:
