There is so much information out there about ADHD it is hard to separate the facts from fiction. Rhonda will explore this and give parents and teachers research based treatment and management suggestions for the classroom and home. The workshop will also explore the safeguards that medical systems have in place. After the presentation there will be an opportunity to ask questions.

Almost 20 years ago Rhonda devoted herself to a rather unknown, and for teachers often puzzling, group of students she referred to as the 'twice exceptional child'. Rhonda's Twice Exceptional Consultancy business was born. The twice exceptional child is gifted but has other factors that, until diagnosed and treated, are causing underachievement. This most frequently manifests in some aspect of literacy and/or numeracy attainments. These difficulties are unexpected in relation to the child's other cognitive skills. It is possible that a highly articulate child can be intellectually gifted but not be able to write a legible text using correct spelling or grammatical structures.

School for these students can be extremely frustrating and challenging and often the nature of their condition means that neither their difficulties nor strengths are recognised and accommodated within the school system. Daily life can be a huge challenge if you are very bright or gifted but you cannot produce work at the level of your intellectual understanding. There may be confusion and emotional turmoil, poor self-efficacy and low self-esteem in that child.

Come along to Ms Filmer's workshop for professionals and teachers to find out how best to identify and support such students within your school. Ms Filmer has received high praise from schools for this workshop which comes with a comprehensive handout emailed to participants prior to the workshop.

The events will run at the Goulburn Soldier's Club on June 17. The teacher/parent workshop will be held from 7pm to 9pm, cost is $20 per person or $10 for SPELD members. Book here
