Part of that reason is Chrisjohn Hancock, the artistic director for the past 30 years and to mark the milestone, a celebratory party was held on Friday, June 25.
Mr Hancock first stepped foot in the Lieder Theatre when he was 14-years-old and said it was one of the best decisions of his life.
"This has been my life," Mr Hancock said.
"This is where I started my career.
"I've always wanted to share my love of theatre.
"By bringing words on the page to life, I think that theatre can change the world and make the audience think of their current situation in life."
He took over the directing role from John Spicer in 1992 and said there was absolutely nothing dull about his role.
"My favourite thing about the place is the camaraderie between everyone," he said.
"There is a strong sense of teamwork among everyone here."
When he first started, he knew it was going to be difficult because he had big shoes to fill, but after a while, he found his groove and everything went uphill from there.
"I felt a lot of pressure at the time because my style was different," he said.
"However, I'm happy people were happy to do what I wanted to do.
"Since I've been here, we've taken shows overseas."
Throughout the years, Mr Hancock has worked with the likes of Lee Lewis and Sam Routledge.
"I have nurtured a lot of people who have gone professional," he said.
"This place has been a stepping stone for many."
Ms Lewis is the current artistic director of the Queensland Theatre Company while Mr Routledge is the artistic director of Terrapin Puppet Theatre in Tasmania.
Former president at the Lieder Theatre Jennifer Lamb, who has been involved with the theatre for a similar amount of time to Mr Hancock, said he had a massive impact.
"He's been really dynamic," Ms Lamb said.
"Theatre's been dying for centuries, but he's managed to keep it alive.
"He followed on from John Spicer who had a massive influence and he's done so well to take things in a new direction.
"He can be confrontational which is what you need sometimes."
The celebration of the Lieder's 130th anniversary was held the next day.
