Police had appealed for public assistance on Thursday to find Wennekes, who escaped while he was working at the back of the prison complex.
The Goulburn Post understands he was working on demountable classrooms at the northern end of the prison when he jumped a fence.
Saint Joseph's and Goulburn North Public School went into lockdowns on Thursday afternoon as a result, The Post has been informed.
Wennekes was serving a three-year sentence for domestic violence-related offences. His earliest release date was March, 2023.
The officer in charge at Goulburn Police Station, Inspector Matt Hinton, said the man was "assisting police with their inquiries".
"Charges are expected to be laid late this evening or early tomorrow morning."
