Goulburn Hay Supplies is a relatively new local business that almost started itself.
It was born of local demand, and owner-operators Adam Perkins and Krystal Egan say that a big part of their success has simply been the result of listening to what customers have been asking for.
Adam's previous enterprise was a local trucking firm, and they still occupy the same site at 5 Gulson Street, Bradfordville.
Buying and selling hay was a bit of a side project to keep cash flowing through the transport operation, but in 2019 it began to look more promising in terms of the type of ongoing concern that Adam and Krystal wanted to run together so Goulburn Hay Supplies was registered as a business in September that year.
They now supply many local horse trainers, greyhound trainers, cattle and sheep farmers, as well as those with other animals to feed like alpacas, chickens, other dogs, cats, ducks, geese, birds, rabbits and more.
You can collect it from the shop or you can have it delivered throughout the region, and if you're close enough and place a large enough order they'll even deliver it for free.
They have various dry hay for the ruminants, along with different pellets, seeds or supplements to suit a variety of creatures.
Another great thing is, if there's a feed product you'd like them to try and get in for you, they're more than happy to do everything they can to procure it.
In addition to suiting Krystal's customer service skills, this industry is also very fitting to Adam's education and experience, having graduated from an agricultural college and spent two and a half decades on a farm (when he wasn't out somewhere in a truck), growing hay at Fullerton just outside of Crookwell.
Adam is only too happy to discuss a client's needs and make a recommendation based on his experience and product knowledge, which certainly gives them a competitive advantage over a chain store.
As those with the animals know, there are different types of hay that suit different animals, or perhaps one animal is having a bit of trouble with one type and could be tried on another for a little while. Adam is only too happy to share what he knows.
Adam and Krystal are also big believers in fairness, and feel that everyone deserves the same great deal for ordering the same amount of the same thing.
They also run the occasional discount or promotion to push a particular product line or just promote themselves, the same as almost every business does.
The biggest thing though, is "we pride ourselves on customer service," Krystal said.
And if you want to place a special order "we will get things in as quickly as we can," which makes them super-helpful as well.
