Goulburn Mulwaree Council crews are on site assessing a break in a trunk main on Clyde Street in order to begin repairs.

A council spokesperson said a high number of properties would be affected by the break, as the main feeds areas within Clyde Street, Fitzroy Street area, Marys Mount and Crestwood.

It is likely some areas will be without water for a significant amount of time.

"Staff will back feed from other areas where they can to avoid pressure loss," the spokesperson said.

A section of Clyde Street is blocked off with a detour in place.
