So it was all in a night's work when Goulburn's NSW Fire and Rescue retained firefighters were called to Verner Street at about 6pm Saturday, July 24 to reports of a trapped possum.

Firefighter Ben Lynch said crews spoke to the occupants who could hear the marsupial in the wall space behind a bedroom.

"Crews attempted to visually confirm the possum's location using a thermal imaging camera, however were unsuccessful," Mr Lynch said.

All was not lost. A firefighter safely scaled the roof and tried to find the possum from an unused chimney. With no luck there, they left a rope dangling down the chimney in case the animal wanted to escape.

It's unknown whether the possum managed to free itself.

"These type of incidents highlight the extensive capability of Fire and Rescue crews and (give us a) chance to assist the community and utilise our training," Mr Lynch said.

Crews are often called out to quirky animal rescues. In 2019, Crookwell Fire and Rescue NSW personnel retrieved a cat, a magpie and a duck within the year.

The duck was stuck in a chimney and crews removed a heater from a bricked up fireplace to retrieve the bird, alive and well.

Captain Glenn Bonomini described it as "a nice feel-good job."
