At about 10.20am this morning, the wind speed reached 81km/h, making it the equal fourth highest speed recorded in the state.

Highrange in the Illawarra took home first prize with a wind gust speed of 93km/h recorded.

A spokesman from the Bureau of Meteorology said the gusts occurred due to an approaching wind gust.

"The squeeze between the approaching wind gust and the high pressure system sitting in the Tasman Sea created the strong north westerly breeze," he said.

"As we head to about 11pm tonight, the wind should die down."

There could be more strong winds coming at the end of the week, but it isn't expected to be as serious as today.

"We have another cold front approaching as we head towards the weekend," the spokesman said.

"That is when we should see the next period of high winds.

"However, we are unlikely to see a severe weather warning for that."

Although the winds didn't cause any damage today, the Goulburn SES Unit said the wind on Saturday, July 25 caused the roof of St Brigid's Church in Breadalbane to fall off.
