Perched above Newport Beach in Sydney's Northern Beaches, LA Cool is an outdoor living space addition to complete the original vision of Carter Williamson Architects' 2015 project, Newport House.
The house sits on the cliff face above Newport Beach, spanning four levels with large balconies framing expansive views across the coastal landscape beyond.
The backyard area, although modest from the outset, features generous outdoor living spaces providing the ideal vantage point to soak in the views across Newport Beach and Pittwater, while fulfilling the vibe of a Californian retreat.
A generously-sized pavilion, featuring both a covered and uncovered section, allows the space to be used throughout changing seasons and weather.
The pavilion's roof is pierced with strategically-placed skylights that allow natural light to bathe the living space.
Fitted with a fireplace, kitchen amenities and woodfire pizza oven, it was vital for the clients to be able to use the outdoor living space all year round said Ben Peake, architect and associate at Carter Williamson.
"Rather than it be relegated purely for use during the summer months, these amenities allow the space to be used throughout the year, be it for dining, entertaining or simply relaxing."

The sleek, modern design, with modest, low-slung living spaces, is unobtrusive to surrounding homes, but provides overhead shelter and spaces to soak in the seaside views, Peake said.
"Ultimately, the largest inspiration for the design was the 180-degree views of Newport engulfing the site, and how to best capture them, whilst simultaneously allowing the outdoor living space to be used 365 days a year," Peake said.
"Our solution was a series of strategic, sculptural cut-outs in LA Cool's western wall allow evening light to pierce through the pavilion, onto the living space."
Not only does this open the space, but creates a "wonderful, ephemeral, breathable environment" to further embrace the natural Australian landscape and views surrounding the home, Peake said.
