The recently departed Goulburn NSW Police Academy principal has accepted a promotion and is now the commander of the Police Properties Group.
As a result, he will still be linked to the academy.
"I am now in charge of all of the NSW Police infrastructure," Supt Smith said.
"There's been $60 million of funding allocated to the academy as part of a program that we're currently working through.
"We want to develop and modernise the academy."
The thing Supt Smith misses most about his role as principal is the connections he made with both students and fellow staff.
"The academy is such a wonderful place to work in," he said.
"The staff there are all highly motivated, are the ultimate professionals and the students there are all keen and eager.
"It was rewarding for me to see them from day one to attestation where they attested as different people."
As his time as principal ends, he hopes students learned a lot from him.
"My job was to make sure that we had the right calibre of people joining our organisation, but also to bring them up to a standard in terms of their academic ability, physical fitness, operational safety and how they demonstrate the values of a NSW police officer."
Superintendent Toby Lindsay replaces Supt Smith and the NSW Police Academy principal.
